I lived in Goa, India for about 15 years. The best time of the year was before New Year and after Christmas. The place is filled with herds of people from all corners of the world during this time.
Living at the beach between those two dates is so much fun. The beaches are alive for nights altogether and the trance music in there takes you to some other world. My husband tended bar back then – he’d get home from the bar around 2:30 or so and have to walk 10 blocks to the house. There are a lot of freaks and druggies living at the beach but they don’t trouble you. I nonetheless hated living at the beach during the summer but nights were much better.
The rest of the year, the months between November and February, were awesome. The weather cooled off, the beaches were cool and a bliss to walk on, the marine layer was thick in the morning and it was easy to sit on the sea wall with a cup of coffee or juice. I loved the solitude and the feeling of closeness the marine layer brought. I know the ocean is massive but at those times it felt considerably smaller.
I love the beach when it’s all my own but not so much when the winter crowds show up.
When I used to live in cochin, the beach was the only place you could go to see an uninterrupted horizon – When it was deserted you could look out to sea and pretend you were somewhere distant and remote.
Now that I am surrounded up views of wide open horizons I still love the beach – the movement and sounds of the open ocean is mesmerizing and the smells (even the sulphuric smells) are enchanting.
